Do Dentures Last Forever?

Do Dentures Last Forever?

No, dentures do not last forever. They need to be relined or rebased every couple of years and should be replaced every 5 to 7 years.

This is because your mouth, like the rest of your body is constantly changing. As time goes by, the bone which supports the denture undergoes resorption and naturally shrinks. This shrinkage is the reason why dentures become loose which impairs your ability to chew and speak properly. When dentures become loose, many people resort to the use of adhesives to hold them in place. While these aids may be useful on a temporary basis, they should not be used routinely. Prolonged wearing of loose dentures will accelerate bone loss. Therefore, the best way to prevent or correct these problems is to have an annual check-up by your denturist. At that time, we will assess any changes that may or may not have taken place and make the necessary adjustments.
